Nucleation under multi-axial loading in variational phase-field models of brittle fracture

چکیده

Phase-field models of brittle fracture can be regarded as gradient damage including an intrinsic internal length. This length determines the stability threshold solutions with homogeneous and thus strength material, is often tuned to retrieve experimental in uniaxial tensile tests. In this paper, we focus on multiaxial stress states show that available energy decompositions, introduced avoid crack interpenetration allow for unsymmetric behavior tension compression, lead surfaces different but fixed shapes. Thus, once scale tailored recover strength, it not possible match compressive or shear strength. We propose a new decomposition enables straightforward calibration multi-axial failure surface Drucker-Prager type. The decomposition, which hinges upon theory structured deformations, encompasses volumetric-deviatoric no-tension special cases. Preserving variational structure model, includes additional free parameter calibrated based ratio (or, if possible, strength), successfully demonstrated two data sets taken from literature.

A phase-field description of dynamic brittle fracture

In contrast to discrete descriptions of fracture, phase-field descriptions do not require numerical tracking of discontinuities in the displacement field. This greatly reduces implementation complexity. In this work, we extend a phase-field model for quasi-static brittle fracture to the dynamic case. We introduce a phasefield approximation to the Lagrangian for discrete fracture problems and de...

A Geometrically Nonlinear Phase Field Theory of Brittle Fracture

Phase field theory is developed for solids undergoing potentially large deformation and fracture. The elastic potential depends on a finite measure of elastic strain. Surface energy associated with fracture can be anisotropic, enabling description of preferred cleavage planes in single crystals, or isotropic, applicable to amorphous solids such as glass. Incremental solution of the Euler–Lagran...

A variational approach to the fracture of brittle thin films subject to out-of-plane loading

We address the problem of fracture in homogenous linear elastic thin films using a variational model. We restrict our attention to quasi-static problems assuming that kinetic effects are minimal. We focus on out-of-plane displacement of the film and investigate the effect of bending on fracture. Our analysis is based on a two-dimensional model where the thickness of the film does not need to be...

investigation of fracture in v-notched brittle polymers under pure shear loading

sudden fracture is one of the major failure modes in brittle materials. plexiglass (polymethyl methacrylate) is a well known brittle polymer, widely used in various industries. many types of notches, particularly v-shaped notches, are sometimes used in the components made of plexiglass. these notches can dramatically decrease the load bearing capacity of components due to the concentration of s...
